Partnership Internazionale per affrontare insieme un problema globale:
il tumore del polmone
Secondo un Studio recente pubblicato su “Annals of Oncology”, quest’anno, per la prima volta, il numero dei decessi per tumore del polmone tra le donne europee, sta per superare quello per tumore alla mammella.
Si prevede infatti questa neoplasia nel 2015 colpirà 14.24 donne su 100.000 in Europa.
Per far fronte a questa situazione, Bonnie Addario e Scott Santarella, rappresentanti della Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (ALCF) e dell’Addario Lung Cancer Medical Institute (ALCMI), insieme al Prof. Giorgio Scagliotti, rappresentante dell’Università di Torino e alla Prof.ssa Silvia Novello e Stefania Vallone, rappresentanti di WALCE onlus hanno dato vita a una partnership a vantaggio e beneficio di tutti pazienti affetti da tumore del polmone nel mondo.
“C’è un bisogno immediato di affrontare questa malattia a livello globale, perché il tumore del polmone è un problema globale”, ha affermato Bonnie Addario, paziente lungo sopravvivente di un tumore al polmone di stadio 3B e fondatrice della ALCF e ALCMI. “La Fondazione Addario ha deciso di lavorare insieme ad altre importanti organizzazioni in tutto il mondo al fine di educare pazienti e medici con l’obiettivo di sradicare questa malattia.”
“Infatti c’è ancora molta disinformazione intorno al tumore del polmone e questo a volte pone degli ostacoli rispetto alle cure dei pazienti”, ha ribadito Stefania Vallone. “Il nostro lavoro come advocate, è quello di aiutare la collettività ad avere una corretta percezione della malattia, evidenziando ciò che è realmente, una malattia complessa che ha molte cause, che può colpire chiunque, indipendentemente dall’età, sesso o storia legata all’abitudine tabagica.
Questa partnership prevede pubbliche relazioni, progetti di promozione e marketing, condivisione di programmi educazionali per pazienti, servizi condivisi da offrire ai pazienti e iniziative sugli studi clinici. Fanno parte di questo programma:
• Annuncio della Partenship il giorno della Giornata Mondiale contro il Cancro del 4 febbraio 2015
• Link ai rispettivi siti web dell’organizzazione
• Individuazione degli Ospedali di Eccellenza in Italia che faranno parte di questo programma
• Sponsorizzazione congiunta di un programma di educazione al paziente durante il Congresso Mondiale IASLC 2015 a Denver, in Colorado (Settembre 2015)
• Premio congiunto al miglior giornalista durante il mese di sensibilizzazione per il tumore del polmone
• Materiali ALCF tradotti in italiano e disponibile tramite sito WALCE
• Materiali WALCE tradotti in inglese e disponibili tramite sito ALCF

Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation
La Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (ALCF) è una delle più grandi organizzazioni fondata da pazienti, focalizzate sui bisogni dei pazienti e guidata da pazienti, esclusivamente dedita a sradicare il tumore del polmone, attraverso la ricerca, la diagnosi precoce, l’informazione e i trattamenti. L’obiettivo della Fondazione è di lavorare con un gruppo eterogeneo formato da medici, case farmaceutiche, organizzazioni, pazienti, sopravvissuti e le loro famiglie per individuare delle soluzioni e cercare operare un cambiamento tempestivo e significativo che porti questa malattia a essere considerata dal 2023 alla stregua di una malattia cronica. La Fondazione è stata istituita il 1° marzo 2006 è una organizzazione non-profit e ha raccolto più di $ 20 milioni per la ricerca sul cancro del polmone.
Addario Lung Cancer Medical Institute
L’Addario Lung Cancer Medical Institute (ALCMI), fondata nel 2008 è un consorzio di ricerca internazionale, incentrata sul paziente. Attualmente gli studi clinici in corso sono: CASTLE, INHERIT EGFR T790M e quello sulla genomica del paziente giovane affetto da Tumore del polmone. Nell’ALCMI lavora una squadra di livello mondiale costituita da ricercatori provenienti da oltre 22 istituzioni tra Stati Uniti e Europa e sostenuta da infrastrutture di ricerca.

International Partnership to Address Lung Cancer Epidemic
According to a recent study in the Annals of Oncology, lung cancer fatalities are set to overtake breast cancer deaths among European women for the first time this year. It is predicted lung cancer deaths for women in Europe will reach 14.24 per 100,000 of the population in 2015.
To address this, representatives from the Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (ALCF) and the Addario Lung Cancer Medical Institute (ALCMI), Bonnie Addario and Scott Santarella, along with representatives from the University of Torino and Women Against Lung Cancer in Europe (WALCE), Prof. Giorgio Scagliotti and Prof Silvia Novello and Stefania Vallone, agreed to form a mutually beneficial working partnership to the benefit of lung cancer patients worldwide.
“There is an immediate need to address the lung cancer epidemic as a global issue,” said Bonnie Addario, Stage 3B lung cancer survivor and founder of the ALCF and ALCMI. “The ALCF has come together with other leading organizations to work together to educate patients and doctors with the goal of eradicating lung cancer.”
“While patient advocates around the world have played an important role in raising lung cancer awareness, misinformation continues to surround this disease, creating barriers to treatment and patient care” said Stefania Vallone. “We are calling on the general public to help correct misperceptions around lung cancer and highlight the disease for what it truly is ,a complicated illness with many causes that can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or smoking history.”
The basis of the partnership includes public relations, marketing and promotional projects, join patient educational programs, shared patient services projects and clinical trial/study initiatives. Examples of these include:
• Partnership announcement in conjunction with World Lung Cancer Day on February 4, 2015
• Website links shared on each organization’s site
• Identification of Community Hospital Centers of Excellence(COE) in Italy to be a part of COE program
• Jointly sponsored patient education program at IASLC 2015 World Congress in Denver, CO
• Potential joint medial/journalism award for Excellence in Lung Cancer Awareness Reporting
• ALCF materials translated in Italian and available via WALCE
• WALCE materials translated into English and available via ALCF
